Throughout history, clay has had many uses. Initially it was used as a method for creating figurines and idols. Later, it became so much more and many of those earlier uses for clay still remain today. One of which is as the tool from which pottery is created. This allowed citizens of the world, centuries ago to store precious liquids, food, and other items and proves useful for many reasons, as well as decorative, all these centuries later.

While it is widely believed that the firing of pottery is something that was learned very much by accident, it is also widely understood that the idea of firing pottery spread like wildfire, if you’ll pardon the pun. In the beginning the firing of pottery was intended only to strengthen the pottery rather than as a decorative enhancement, though the strengthening was minimal and the ability to enhance pottery creative and artistically was greatly improved.

As time moved on, as it inevitably does, various tribes and cultures made their own unique marks upon the pottery of their people. Most recovered pottery throughout history is easily recognizable according to tribe or people, not only because of the location in which it was discovered but also as the result of the artistic markings that were made upon the pottery and, in many cases, the method of firing the pottery that was used in the process of its creation.

Early pottery wasn’t glazed because of the high, sustained temperature that is required in order to glaze pieces. It simply wasn’t possible to regulate these temperatures in early societies. It was several centuries before kilns were created that would allow pottery makers to control the temperatures of the fire and reach the desired temperature to improve options for glazing these precious pieces of pottery.

Quite a while later we began using natural gasses to control and regulate the temperature for firing pottery. The problem with this is that in a world that is increasingly dependent on natural gasses and a limited supply there are many who feel this is an irresponsible method for heating kilns. Add to that the notions of global warming and worries over pollution, many are turning back to the trees for heat sources. The good news is that trees are a renewable source of energy to fuel the fires of the kilns and they burn clean. Of course this isn’t the one-size fits all solutions and it isn’t the answer that everyone has. There are still those who use natural gas or electricity to fire pottery. Wood is simply the choice that many artisans and craftsmen (and women of course) are making in order to do their part to save the planet.

That being said, wood firing is a very time consuming process for firing pottery and involves no small amount of labor. For this reason, expect to pay considerably more for pottery pieces you purchase that are wood fired. If you are planning to make your own pottery you should definitely understand that wood firing is a very labor intensive process that requires constant monitoring of the fire and in many cases constant feeding of the fire in order to maintain the constant temperatures necessary to fire the pottery properly. The results are beautiful pieces that have a low impact to Mother Earth in the long or short terms of things.

Throughout history pottery has proven to be both useful in a utilitarian sense and quite beautiful according to the artists that created various pieces. These are all community building tools
designed to create recurring visitors
and addicts.

But guess what?

THEY ARE ALL INFERIOR COMMUNITY CREATION
TOOLS WHEN COMPARED TO A GOOD AUTORESPONDER.

To quote Martin Lawrence:

“BELIEVE that!”

See, most people use their autoresponders
WRONG.

And the worst part is – they don’t even know
they’re doing it.

Blogs, message boards, and content sites
have the disadvantage of needing people
to come to them in order to be effective.

Emails are different.

Emails go DIRECTLY to the people.

You ever lure a dog closer to you with a piece
of food?

Well, imagine the email is a piece of food,
and your potential customer is the dog.

You can take the time to have the dog come
to you to get the food…

Or you can toss the food to the dog.

In both situations, you’re going to win
the dog’s trust. But one is MUCH FASTER
than the other.

Eventually the dog you toss the food to
will start coming to you, while the other
dog will always be a bit wary.

The same is true of email.

So a good autoresponder will get you exposure
to your customers, but more importantly, it
will begin to BUILD A RELATIONSHIP with them!

And let me tell you something: Customer
Relationships are VITAL to selling!

The customer will get to know you, get to know
your products, and get to know your company.

And eventually, be it 2 days later or 2 years
later, they will EVENTUALLY buy.

Now, imagine if every first time visitor to your
website joins your autoresponder.

Because of your autoresponder sequence, I’m willing
to bet that at least 20%-60% of them to become
recurring visitors.

And of that, maybe 10% become ADDICTS, if you
incorporate a blog or message board into your
site.

That’s when things get REALLY fun.

But make no mistake about it: It all depends on
how you set up your autoresponder sequence!

Do it right, you create a community of buyers
around your business.

Do it wrong, and you’re just wasting your time
and money.

21 Lanzarote Attractions – Timanfaya

The Montañas del Fuego (Fire Mountains), to give them there proper name were created in the 1730’s when more than 100 volcanos in what is now the National Park, rose up to devastate the southern part of the island. Eruptions lasted for six years and several villages were completely destroyed. The last eruption on the island was in 1824.

Because Lanzarote has such low rainfall (and therefore a lack of erosion) the area appears much as it did at the time and in 1968 the area was declared a national park “Parque Nacional de Timanfaya”.

We decided to make a full day of this trip and we firmly believe that this a must see for any visitor to the island, because of its unique ‘martian’ landscape and rare plant species. On entry to the national park (entrance was around 8 euros per person, as I recall, and the small children were free as is usual at many of the islands attractions), the first thing to catch our eye were camels and of course we had to stop because the children wanted a ride !

An hour or so later, we arrived at the Car park of the Islote de Hilario, where we saw a crowd of people standing around a hole. This was to be the first of two quite stunning demonstrations of just how hot the area is just below the ground. We were told that temperatures a few metres below ground are a staggering 400°C to 600°C.

Dry bushes were thrown into a hole and in less than a minute, it caught fire !

Water was then poured into a bore hole and seconds later the water erupted back into the air as steam and we all got a warm shower because we were standing on the wrong side.

Next up was the ‘El Diablo’ restaurant, another creation of the famous artist (Cesar Manrique), whose influence is everywhere on the island. Here we find traditional Canarian food cooked using geothermal heat (A cast-iron grill placed over a large hole in the ground). Where else in the world can you get your food cooked on a volcano !

We then went on a coach trip of the National Park (part of the entrance fee). If your feeling a little queasy or don’t like heights don’t sit by the window as it can be quite scary (but very safe and the children absolutely loved it). The coach stops at several strategic points in order that you can get some amazing pictures and film (so don’t forget to take the camera/video with you). During the trip we listened to recorded narration based on words captured by the priest of Yaiza at the time of the eruptions.

Another great day and another great attraction.

It is the same old story through the ages- the eternal conflict between the Light and Darkness. These two forces can not exist at the same time at the same place. When the Light arrives, we need not order the darkness to go. It automatically disappears. Rather it has to. The springtime is the time when honeybees reproduce. The natural means of reproduction for honey bees is called swarming. The springtime swarming period typically last about three weeks. Normally a single swarm of honey bees divide and becomes two during the swarming period.

Because swarming typically means a loss of production so beekeepers try to discourage the behavior. One way that beekeepers eliminate swarming in their hives is by purchasing new bees each spring to replace their previous bees that they turned out of the hives the previous fall. Another method commonly used by beekeepers to discourage swarming is the creation of a starter colony. Creating a starter hive and then splitting it encourages bees to stay in their hives. Some beekeepers believe that bees only swarm when they have an abundance of food in the hive. Beekeepers who subscribe to this theory use a method called checker boarding to discourage their bees from swarming. When a beekeeper checkerboards their hives they remove some of the full frames of honey, giving the bees the illusion that they don’t have any honey in reserve, and therefore discouraging the bees from swarming.

It is unusual for a bees to swarm when there is a new queen in the bee hive. As time passes and the Queen ages is when the hive typically prepares to swarm, generally the elderly queen leaves with the primary swarm, leaving a virgin queen in her place. When the elderly queen is getting ready to swarm with the primary swarm she stops laying eggs. She concentrates on getting fit enough to fly when she leaves the hive (the only other time the queen has flown is when she went out on her nuptial flight). When smaller swarms leave the hive they are commonly accompanied by the virgin queen.

When they first leave the hive in a swarm, bees don’t typically go far from the hive they have always known. After fleeing the nest the bees settle on a nearby tree branch or under an eave. The worker bees cluster around the queen, protecting her. Once they have the queen protected, some bees, scouts, look around until they find a suitable hive to turn into their new home.

Some beekeepers see swarming as a way to restock their hives. An experienced bee keeper has no problem capturing a group of swarming bees. Beekeepers use a device to called a Nasrove Pheromone to lure swarming honey bees.
When they swarm, honey bees carry no additional food with them. The only honey they are allowed to take from the parent hive is the honey they consumed.
Although honey bees normally swarm only during the spring the same is not true of Africanized Bees, also called Killer Bees. The Africanized Bees swarm whenever they have a difficult time finding food.
Although they typically don’t go after people when they are swarming, their is something about the site of a swarm of bees that scares people. It is not unusual for a beekeeper to be called out to capture a colony of swarming bees.

What child doesn’t grow up with Dr. Seuss books? We have quite a few of them lying around the house. The kids love the silly characters and the rhymes. The Dr. Seuss inspired recipes that I’m about to share with you have been a great hit in my house. Of course the famous green eggs and ham are included, but there are also quite a few other snack and meal ideas. Create a fun Dr. Seuss inspired afternoon with some of these recipes and of course don’t forget to read a few of the books with your kids. (If you don’t own any, enjoy a trip to your local library.)

Green Eggs and Ham

This has to be the most famous Dr. Seuss inspired dish. Scramble a few eggs, add a couple of drops of blue food coloring to the mixture and cook as usual. You can serve a warmed up slice of ham with it, and if you want to go all out, brush the ham with a little green food coloring.

My kids love either biscuits, or mashed potatoes with this dish. Add a little food coloring (either green, or a complimentary color like red) to the biscuit dough or the finished mashed potatoes for even more fun.

Cat in The Hat Snack

Make the Cat’s Hat for a fun snack. All you need is a few Ritz crackers, gummy lifesavers (preferably in white/clear and red) and a little vanilla frosting. Put the Ritz cracker on a plate. Use a little bit of vanilla frosting to glue the first lifesaver on the cracker. “Glue” more lifesavers on top of the first one alternating between red and white.
These snacks are so cute; you may want to take a picture of your child’s creation before it is devoured.

Wiggly Fish

This snack was inspired by “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish”. Prepare several different colors of Jello according to package directions and pour each flavor into a shallow pan. Use a fish shaped cookie cutter to cut the Jello into fish shapes. (If you don’t have a fish shaped cookie cutter you could also just cut fish shapes with a knife.) You can also add small pieces of fruit to the Jello mixture before it cools. This is a great way to sneak an extra serving of fruit into your child’s diet.

Pink Ink for The Yink

The Yink in “One Fish, Two Fish” love to drink pink ink. Make your own version by combining a few strawberries (either fresh, or frozen and thawed) and some milk in a blender. Add a few drops of red food coloring if the “ink” isn’t pink enough.

A Fruity Hat For The Cat

How about this for a fun Sunday breakfast? Whip up a batch of silver dollar pancakes and cut up some fresh strawberries. Grab some whipped cream and let the kids assemble the Cat’s hat by stacking pancakes, and strawberries on top of each other using the whipped cream as “glue”.

Enjoy a few of these Dr. Seuss inspired snacks and meals with your family, or invite a few neighbor kids over for a Dr. Seuss party. Either way they are a lot of fun and a great way to bring some of the Seuss stories to life.

Garlic is one of the more pungent odors that you will ever experience, and you will want to have tricks to get rid of it as soon as possible. Here is a suggestion, after you cook something with garlic, rub your hands on the base of your stainless steel sink for a minute to eliminate the pungent odor off of your skin.

The secret to a great mole sauce is the cocoa powder. Take a cue from Mexican mole and try using a bit of cocoa powder in your typical Italian pasta sauces, as well. A touch of cocoa powder imparts a “been simmering for days” Flavor and complexity, while not being too overpowering.

Learn to make a good roux. When you are learning to make the best bases for your cooking, consider learning the art of making a roux. It consists of mixing oils, fats, or butters and cooking with flour. If you enjoy making Cajun or French foods, roux is a mainstay.

When you are making casseroles, roasts, and other things that may stick to the bottom of a baking sheet, you should line the bottom of the pan with foil. This is a good idea because after you are done cooking you can throw the foil away and you will not have a lot of cleaning up to do.

Leftover vegetable pieces shouldn’t go to waste. Broccoli tops, carrot pieces and onion peelings can be added to your vegetable, beef or chicken stock, to fill it with extra flavor. Don’t forget to add the stock to your favorite meals to enhance their flavor and appear as a great cook in front of your friends and family.

Salvage an overcooked soup or stew. If you left the heat too high when cooking soup or stew, you may end up scorching it, but all is not lost. If you only burnt the bottom, carefully pour or ladle the rest of the food into a container, ensuring that you don’t scrape the sides or bottom of the pot. Ice Cream Creation S’mores

Serves 4

1 Everybody’s (48-oz. size) Cold Stone Ice Cream Creation (suggested creations: Coffee Lovers Only, Peanut Butter Cup Perfection or Founder’s Favorite)

4 graham crackers (8 small squares)

4 teaspoons fudge syrup

4 teaspoons marshmallow fluff

1. Break a graham wafer in half, forming 2 squares.

2. Coat one square with a teaspoon of fluff and the other with a teaspoon of fudge.

3. Place a rounded scoop of the ice cream creation in the center of the fluff-coated wafer.

4. Place the fudge-coated wafer on top of the ice cream scoop.

5. Gently press down to spread out the ice cream.

6. Place on a tray and freeze for a minimum of 1 hour before serving.
